Shots

The chiquita

The chiquita is the other great shot for winning back the net (the first is the lob). From the back, you send a slow, low ball at the feet of the opponent at the net. To return it they must hit upwards, and that gives you time to move up.

When to use it

  • The opponents are at the net and you are at the back.
  • The ball reaches you low and you cannot play a good lob.
  • You want to mix it up: if you always lob, the opponent gets used to it.

Technique

  1. Hit the ball after the bounce, with the racket face slightly open.
  2. No power: a short, soft swing.
  3. Add slice so the ball drops quickly after crossing the net.
  4. Aim at the feet of the net player, or down the middle between the two.
  5. Move up to the net with your partner while the opponent lifts it.

Common mistakes

  • Hitting it hard: if the ball arrives fast, the opponent volleys it easily.
  • Leaving it high: if it rises above the net, it is a gift to smash.
  • Not moving up: the chiquita only makes sense if you then take the net.

In Padelbang

Swipe down, softly from the back: your player plays a chiquita at the opponent’s feet. At the net, the same gesture is a drop shot.

Frequently asked questions

What is a chiquita in padel?

A slow, low shot from the back aimed at the feet of the opponent at the net. It forces them to lift the ball and lets you move up to the net.

Chiquita or lob?

Both win the net back. The lob goes over the opponents; the chiquita goes under, to their feet. Mixing them confuses the opponent.

Why is it called chiquita?

“Chiquita” means “little one” in Spanish: a small, slow, short ball with no power that aims for placement rather than pace.
